Renters Plumbing Tips
If you read our post about plumbing tips for first time home owners or have brought a house yourself; you understand the worry, stress and responsibility plumbing issues may give. However, don’t be mistaken; renting especially for the first time is as equally stressful and requires some responsibility/organization as well. But don’t worry here a few tips to making the renting process move easily when it comes to plumbing problems:
1) Communication is key: Speak with the landlord and make sure you guys are in agreement to all terms. If plumbing issues arise who takes care of repairs? What major issues will the landlord cover and are you expected to cover minor problems? (Be sure to write down what is considered major vs. minor). Get ALL agreements/terms written down and signed just in case a problem does arise.
2) Take a tour and ask lots of questions: As the landlord shows you around the property take a special interest in ALL plumbing areas. Ask if there is any general plumbing problems that are current or has occurred within the past few years. Have the landlord show you were the shut off valves are located to the water main, toilets, and sinks. This will come in handy in the case you need to stop the flow of water in an emergency.
3) During renting period: although the landlord may be responsible for plumbing repairs, it is still beneficial to learn simple repairs such as unclogging a toilet. Be cautious of the items you flush down sink, toilet and tub because it is your responsibility to take proper care of the fixtures you use and clean properly.
