Retrieve your valuables

Updated: Aug 16, 2019

Have you or anyone you know ever lose a valuable item such as a ring, necklace, earring etc. down the drain? Well you must know the heart wrenching feeling as soon as you hear the clanking sound of your item going down the drain. In moments like these it is important to stay calm and immediately turn off the water. That will minimize the chance of your items going all the way to the drain stack, at which the item may end up in the sewer line having no chance of retrieval. Jewelry is usually the most common and easiest item to retrieve since metals and gemstones sink in water. This increases the chance that the jewelry piece will sink to the bottom of the plumbing trap. On the other hand if the item is not jewelry or isn’t as valuable to you, try to retrieve the items anyway.

If the item gets stuck in the trap it can allow hair and debris to accumulate eventually causing a clog in your drain. The trap under your sink is designed to prevent odors from seeping up and is handy for catching lost items. In order to retrieve your valuables open the trap. You will need a bucket to catch water. Then, remove the “J” part of the trap using a wrench or pliers. In the case you have a plastic pipe, unscrew the nuts by hand, pull the trap off the pipe and shake out your lost item. Once your item is retrieved place the drain plumbing back together the same way it came apart. This sounds easy, but maybe a bit tricky so it may be helpful to have someone take pictures of the pipe before you touch it or video you removing the pipe

so you can retrace your steps.

If you are having any problem with retrieval of your item or placing the pipes back together call Empire Water Main & Sewer (718)715-4862!!! We are a 24/7 service and would be happy to help!!
