Have you walked into the kitchen or bathroom and noticed a strong sewer odor coming from your drain? Luckily the most common causes for these odors are the easiest to fix. Smells can travel in a room if a drain pipe’s water trap has dried. To resolve the dry water trap all you need to do is run water. When water does not run down a drain for a while the water can evaporate causing sewer smells to seep up. Allow water to run for several seconds to refill the trap, wait a few minutes and wait for the odor to diminish. In the case that the odor is still present there may be a chance that a biofilm has built up within the drain pipe. This is found most commonly in kitchen sinks.
To resolve this issue scrubbing away the slime is most effective. You can do it yourself, but it may be difficult depending on the type of pipe. You can remove the drain cover and scrub the inside with a pipe brush. Pouring a mixture of bleach and water down the drain covers the inside of the pipe walls helps deodorize it as well. If you become aware of this smell coming from multiple drains and all water traps are full you may have a bigger problem deep in the sewer system.
